Fishing boats come and go, slipping soundlessly into and out of the small harbour, dissolving into the fog (when its foggy, which happens often, I am told) or ploughing through the placid water, the wake rippling and sparkling in the sunshine. In early afternoon these colourful lobster boats return, one after the another, and it’s fascinating to watch them from our sitting room window, coming in with speed and determination, a bow wave piled up in front, as they charge right into the small entrance of the harbour. I wonder, will they stop in time! And yet they always do, losing speed suddenly as they swing, then drift around, and pull up against the jetty or snuggle up against another boat.
